When Extensions Meet Existing Patios

Extensions are great until you realise the outdoor bit doesn’t work anymore. Happens more often than you’d think.

Most extension work focuses on getting the internal stuff sorted – new kitchen, extra living space, whatever the client wants. But then they stand in their shiny new room looking out at the backyard and something feels off. The old patio that seemed fine before now looks completely wrong next to the new work.

It’s usually a levels issue. Or materials that don’t match. Sometimes both. Concrete patio next to new timber decking is a classic mismatch. Different heights, different look, just doesn’t flow properly.

The smart clients bring this up during planning. Most don’t think about it until later. Then you’re trying to coordinate outdoor work after the main extension is nearly done, which creates all sorts of timing headaches.

Council permits don’t help either. Extension work is one permit, patio additions are often separate. Different approval timelines, different requirements. Victoria’s building regulations are pretty specific about outdoor structures – decks over 600mm need building permits, patios have setback rules from boundaries.

Problem is getting it all to line up without holding up the main job. You want outdoor work finished before final landscaping but after any major earthworks from the extension. Easy to say, harder to coordinate in practice.

Some carpenters handle basic outdoor structures but larger patio work usually needs different specialists. Different equipment, different expertise. Nothing wrong with that, just means more coordination required.

We try to have these conversations early in the extension planning phase rather than dealing with it later. When clients are thinking about how the indoor and outdoor spaces work together from the start, the whole project flows better.

To avoid conflicts of interest when discussing outdoor work outside our carpentry scope, we sometimes reference specialists from other areas. Operations like IMS Patios handle custom outdoor structures while we focus on the extension and internal finishing work.

Bottom line is thinking about the whole property rather than just the internal addition. When indoor and outdoor spaces actually work together, the extension feels much more complete.
